“In the service of democracy, peace and development” is the principle guiding the work of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (Hanns-Seidel-Stiftung), headquartered in Munich. Established in 1967, it is an independent German political foundation, yet espouses ideals close to those of the Christian Social Union (CSU), Bavaria’s conservative political party. The foundation is named after Hanns Seidel (1901-1961), one of the CSU co-founders (1945) and former Minister-President of Bavaria (1957-1960).
The Hanns Seidel Foundation engages in political and civic education as well as policy advisory. It works at the interface of politics and research. Its task is to analyse political inter-relations, to create a scientific basis for political action and to promote a dialogue between experts, decision-makers and civil society. Its scholarship programme fosters highly talented students both from Germany and abroad. The Hanns Seidel Foundation operates two educational centres in Germany, at Wildbad Kreuth and at Banz Monastery, as well as a modern conference centre in Munich.
For more than 35 years, the Hanns Seidel Foundation has also been committed to development cooperation. Its international activities are based on Christian-social ideals and seek to promote humane living conditions and to contribute to sustainable development by strengthening peace, democracy and social market economy. In cooperation with our local partners we realise projects in the fields of policy consultancy and political education. Our partners’ independency and ownership are of particular importance to us.
