SUMMARY:Training Workshop in Dakar: Women and Leadership – Breaking Down the Glass Ceiling
DESCRIPTION:Dakar\, Senegal — 2–4 December 2025\nFrom 2 to 4 December 2025\, Dakar will host a three-day regional training workshop titled “Women and Leadership: Breaking Down the Glass Ceiling”\, organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) in partnership with the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) under the WYDE Political Parties Project\, funded by the European Union. \nThe workshop will gather young women leaders from political parties\, civil society\, local and national institutions\, the media\, and the entrepreneurial sector\, offering a dedicated space to strengthen leadership skills\, foster political participation\, and build a sustainable network of emerging female leaders. \nWomen’s Leadership in Senegal: Progress and Persistent Barriers\nSenegal is often recognised as a reference point in West Africa for its strong legal and institutional commitments to women’s rights. With the 2001 Constitution enshrining gender equality and the notable 2010 Parity Law\, the country has made substantial advances. \nHowever\, despite these achievements\, women’s political and civic participation continues to fall short of expectations. Many still face social norms\, institutional barriers\, and the enduring challenges of the “glass ceiling.” While the legal framework is robust\, awareness of these rights remains low\, and structural constraints continue to limit women’s access to leadership roles. \nPromoting women’s leadership is therefore essential for inclusive governance\, democratic resilience\, and for advancing key Sustainable Development Goals\, including SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). \nA Space for Empowerment\, Dialogue\, and Practical Skills\nOver the three days\, the Dakar workshop will provide participants with practical tools and strategic insights to strengthen their leadership and civic engagement. The programme will feature: \n\nExpert-led thematic presentations\nInteractive group work and peer exchanges\nExperience-sharing sessions and case studies\nPractical exercises on leadership and political participation\n\nActivities will encourage reflection on the mechanisms of the glass ceiling and identify concrete levers for both individual and collective empowerment. \nBeyond capacity-building\, the training aims to foster a dynamic network of young women leaders capable of advocating for inclusive\, equitable\, and democratic governance across Senegal. \nParticipants and Target Groups\nThe workshop will bring together: \n\nYoung women leaders from political parties\nYoung elected officials (local and national)\nWomen leaders from civil society organisations\nYoung women entrepreneurs\nJournalists and media practitioners\n\nThis cross-sector approach ensures diverse perspectives and strengthens the ecosystem of women’s leadership in Senegal. \nVisibility and Engagement\nThroughout the event\, visibility will be ensured through EU\, WYDE\, ENoP and FNF branding\, professional photography\, and short video interviews capturing participant perspectives on leadership and participation. \nFollowing the workshop\, a wrap-up article\, testimonials\, and visual highlights will be shared across WYDE and partner communication platforms. \nSupporting Inclusive Leadership Across Senegal\nThis workshop represents a meaningful contribution to advancing women’s political and civic leadership in Senegal. By investing in skills\, dialogue\, and networks\, the initiative supports a new generation of women leaders committed to shaping a more inclusive\, equitable\, and democratic future.

SUMMARY:Towards Inclusive and Accountable Party Systems: Regional Workshop on Political Party Regulation in Africa
DESCRIPTION:ORPPs from Kenya\, Malawi and Sierra Leone meet in Freetown to validate findings and advance a shared roadmap for regional collaboration\nRepresentatives from the Offices of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPPs) of Kenya\, Malawi and Sierra Leone gathered in Freetown on 1–2 December 2025 for a regional workshop dedicated to strengthening political party regulation and advancing gender and youth inclusion across party systems. \nThe event — hosted by the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) of Sierra Leone and co-organised by the Christian Democratic International Centre (KIC) and the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) under the WYDE Political Parties Project — marked a key milestone in the implementation of a comparative study commissioned by KIC on behalf of the project. \n\nA milestone in validating country findings and building regional alignment\nThe workshop provided the first in-person platform for ORPP representatives\, researchers and partners to validate the preliminary findings of the comparative study examining legal frameworks\, institutional mandates and regulatory practices in the three participating countries. A central focus throughout the study has been the mechanisms — and gaps — related to gender and youth inclusion in political parties. \nDiscussions enabled participants to: \n\nreview and affirm country-specific findings from Malawi\, Kenya and Sierra Leone\nengage in in-depth dialogue on shared challenges and best practices\nrefine the comparative analysis synthesising data from all three contexts\nidentify priorities for strengthening regulation\, transparency and inclusion\n\nThese exchanges underscored the crucial role played by political party regulatory bodies in creating enabling environments for more representative and accountable party systems. \n\nCharting a path toward AAPPRA\nA central outcome of the workshop was the collective reflection on the proposed roadmap toward establishing the Africa Association of Political Party Regulatory Authorities (AAPPRA) — a long-term vision aimed at deepening cooperation\, harmonising standards and promoting peer learning among national regulators across the continent. \nORPP representatives emphasised how a regional platform could: \n\nfacilitate continuous dialogue on regulatory reforms\nstrengthen institutional capacities\nadvance gender and youth inclusion standards\nsupport more transparent\, credible and accountable party systems\n\nThe workshop concluded with an agreement on next steps\, including a future hybrid meeting to consolidate recommendations and operationalise the framework for AAPPRA. \n\nStrengthening collaboration for inclusive democratic systems\nBy bringing together institutions responsible for political party oversight\, the workshop reinforced the broader objectives of the WYDE Political Parties Project: to promote inclusive\, transparent and accountable political party systems that reflect the voices of women and young people. \nPartner organisations expressed their appreciation to PPRC Sierra Leone for hosting the meeting and to all participants for their commitment to advancing regulatory cooperation and democratic resilience in Africa.

SUMMARY:Training of Trainers (ToT) on Youth and Women Inclusion in Democratic Processes
DESCRIPTION:🗓️ Date: 3-6 August 2025\n📍 Location: Nairobi\, Kenya\n🔗 Organisers: Kenya Parliamentary Human Rights (KEPHRA) \nDespite notable progress in Kenya’s democratic journey\, youth and women remain significantly underrepresented in formal political spaces\, including within political parties. Limited access to civic education\, low awareness of internal party structures\, and systemic exclusion have hindered meaningful engagement at all levels of governance. \nAs part of the European Union-funded WYDE Political Parties project\, which seeks to empower young women and youth across Africa to take up leadership roles within political parties\, the Kenya Parliamentary Human Rights (KEPHRA) aims to develop a national pool of trainers capable of cascading knowledge\, skills\, and democratic values at the local level. \nThe overall objective of the Training of Trainers (ToT) is to build the capacity of selected youth and women leaders from various counties to become civic educators and political trainers within their communities. Through this\, the initiative seeks to foster grassroots-level understanding of party structures\, internal democracy\, and broader governance issues. \nSpecific Objectives \n\nEquip participants with facilitation and training skills to lead local-level civic education sessions.\nDeepen knowledge on five thematic areas key to inclusive democratic participation:\n\nYouth Unemployment\nEnvironment\nEconomy\nRule of Law\nSocial Justice and Equality\n\n\nStrengthen understanding of democracy\, leadership pathways\, and political participation.\nPromote peer-to-peer learning\, mentorship\, and sustainable civic engagement structures.\n\nExpected Outcomes \n\nA trained cohort of facilitators capable of conducting grassroots civic trainings.\nLocally relevant action plans developed by each participant for cascading knowledge.\nStrengthened community-level awareness and participation in democratic processes.\nIncreased visibility and legitimacy of youth and women as political actors.\n\nThe ToT will be delivered over two days through a participatory and experiential learning approach. Facilitators will use storytelling\, case studies\, simulations\, group work\, and community mapping to ensure content is accessible\, engaging\, and practical. \nParticipants will receive a detailed training manual and resource toolkit aligned with the five themes and adapted to local realities. \nThis activity is implemented under the WYDE Political Parties project\, aligned with the EU’s strategic objective of strengthening democratic governance and gender equity across Africa. It contributes to broader efforts to foster inclusive political systems\, decentralized civic education\, and sustainable community leadership.

SUMMARY:Crisis of Democracy? The Role of Political Parties in the Year of Global Elections 2024
DESCRIPTION:A roundtable event on the importance of political parties and electoral developments for Global Europe (2024-2029)\n\n\nPolitical parties play a crucial role in democracy by connecting the public with the government. They represent diverse interests\, provide a platform for debate\, and help shape policy ideas. Through elections\, parties give voters clear choices and ensure government accountability. By promoting citizen participation\, they engage people in the democratic process and influence policy decisions. \nHowever\, parties today face significant challenges\, including limited resources\, internal ideological differences\, and difficulties in adapting to societal needs\, such as integrating youth. As a result\, new parties often emerge\, addressing contemporary concerns and bringing fresh perspectives. To remain relevant\, political parties must adapt\, respond to constituents\, and commit to ethical governance. \nThis roundtable event focuses on the EU’s commitment to democracy promotion. It brings together political party representatives from around the world\, providing a unique platform for networking and exchanging experiences. Against the backdrop of the 2024 elections in the EU\, India\, Georgia\, and other countries\, participants will discuss democracy\, collaboration\, and innovation in the face of today’s challenges. This initiative supports EU institutions in fostering international party dialogue and strengthening global democratic processes and governance. \nContributors will be identified and approached by KAS in cooperation with European Network of Political Foundations. In order to foster an open exchange\, all meetings will be held under Chatham House Rule. \nIf you are interested to participate and attend the event\, please reach out to jonas.nitschke@kas.de.

SUMMARY:International Democracy Day Brussels 2023
DESCRIPTION:The European Endowment for Democracy (EED)\, European Partnership for Democracy (EPD)\, International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA)\, European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP)\, and Carnegie Europe are proud to invite you to the 2023 edition of the International Democracy Day Brussels. \nThe event will take place on Thursday\, 14 September (afternoon)\, and Friday\, 15 September (morning)\, at the European Committee of the Regions in Brussels. \nThe theme of the ninth edition of IDD Brussels is ‘An era of democratic unrest?’. Experts and activists will discuss how the global decline of democracy and the rise of authoritarianism worldwide have been met with a new wave of civic activism. \nThroughout 2022\, major protests occurred in Iran\, Georgia\, Pakistan\, Sri Lanka\, China\, and Hong Kong\, as citizens worldwide took to the streets to demand their rights and a more democratic future for their countries. Meanwhile\, in Ukraine\, a massive volunteer movement has emerged to meet the population’s needs at a time of war. \nWe are now at a watershed moment for democracy’s future. The European Union can seize the opportunity of this era of democratic unrest to deepen its ties with worldwide pro-democracy movements by supporting their efforts. \nThese and other important matters will be debated in the 2023 edition of International Democracy Day Brussels.

SUMMARY:What Can be Learned From Crises? Western Balkans’ EU Enlargement in the Shadows of the Covid-19 Pandemic\, the War in Ukraine\, and the Energy Crisis.
DESCRIPTION:ENoP members Kalevi Sorsa Foundation and Ajatuspaja Visio have the pleasure to invite you to the upcoming discussion: \nWhat can be learned from crises? Western Balkans’ EU enlargement in the shadows of the Covid-19 pandemic\, the War in Ukraine\, and the energy crisis. \nSeveral crises have tested Europe in recent years. All of them have strongly affected the Western Balkans – a region that aspires to join the EU – but has for years been stuck in the waiting room. \nAfter the pandemic and now during the Russian war in Ukraine and the energy crisis\, the Western Balkan region appears as a battlefield of power politics\, where the EU should take care of its own interests. \nThe discussion looks at the different implications the crises have had on the Western Balkan countries and especially their EU rapprochement. Moving forward\, what have the crises taught us? What has been the EU’s role in helping the region and what could be Finland’s role in the future? \nThese and many other questions will be discussed among regional and Finnish politicians\, CSO experts\, and academia in Musiikkitalo on the 24th of January from 09:00-11:00. The event will discuss the report published by Kalevi Sorsa Foundation and European Network of Political Foundations: Has Covid-19 moved Western Balkan countries closer to or further from the EU. \nProgram \n09:00 Opening \n09.05 Ledjon Shahini\, Director\, Qemal Stafa Foundation Albania: Covid-19-pandemic and the democratic backslide in the Western Balkans \n09.20 Brendan Humphreys\, Senior Researcher\, Aleksanteri Institute: Russian war on Ukraine and regional responses \n09.35 Irfan Cengic\, MP\, House of Peoples\, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina: Energy crisis and its implications \n09.50 Pilvi Torsti\, State Secretary: The EU’s role and support \n10.10 Pekka Haavisto\, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland: The role of Finland as a member state \n10.25 Discussion \n10.55 Closing words \nThe event will be moderated by Jelena Simic from Kalevi Sorsa Foundation. \nVenue: Musiikkitalo Lämpiö\, Kansalaistori 2G\, Helsinki\, Finland \nLanguage: English \nStreaming: A stream link will be sent to those who have registered. \nThis event is organised with the support of ENoP as part of its current EU co-funded project “Strengthening ENoP as Actor in Support of Democratic and Pluralistic Societies”.

SUMMARY:Launch | Research on Social Capital in Poland and Hungary
DESCRIPTION:The European Network of Political Foundations and Projekt: Polska Foundation present a study on social trust and human capital in Poland and Hungary. The role of trust in the formation of social capital is crucial due to the current socio–political situation\, in particular the growing political polarization\, significant differences in confidence in the European Union between member\, and finally\, the COVID–19 pandemic. The report describes social capital in Poland and Hungary in terms of four dimensions: 1) Trust\, 2) Norms and values\, 3) Structure and 4) Action. \nThe study was based on qualitative and quantitative research conducted in Poland and Hungary. The results of the surveys shows that people in both countries are cautious towards others\, and only a minority believes that people can be trusted. Nevertheless\, there are significant differences between countries\, in particular if it comes to declared trust in the European Union\, as in the case of Poland it is the highest of all institutions surveyed\, while in Hungary it is one of the lowest. \nDuring the event\, authors of the report will present their findings in detail\, and will engaged in a discussion about the role of trust in modern democracy. \nProgramme \nWelcome: \n\nMiłosz Hodun\, President\, Projekt: Polska\n\nOpening remarks: \n\nAndrea Virág\, Director\, Republikon Institute\n\nSpeakers: \n\nKrzysztof Mączka\, auothor of the report\, A. Mickiewicz University\nMaciej Milewicz\, author of the report\, independent researcher\n\nModeration: Maja Obrebowska\, Projekt: Polska \nQ&A \nThe event will be taking place in Poznań\, Poland.
