SUMMARY:Democracy Dialogues: The Future of Political Party Cooperation
DESCRIPTION:Political parties are one of the key formats of citizens’ organising for political participation and representation\, political party support as such is identified to be amongst crucial elements of Democracy Promotion in Partner Country Cooperation Programs of the EU.During the last few decades\, EU institutions have developed numerous documents and guidelines on the effective promotion of human rights in third countries. Still\, clear policies and guidelines for political party cooperation as part of effective democracy promotion remain underdeveloped. Although not excluded\, the issue is rather minimised\, due to the sensitivity and nature of the topic. \nDespite this\, EU engagement in political party cooperation offers ample opportunities for promoting constructive partnerships in the areas of peace and security\, climate change and disaster prevention\, the management of migration\, as well as other thematic fields. Political parties are key channels through which future leaders develop both public policies\, as well as original ideas. It is also important to mention that several EU member states (e.g. Sweden\, Finland\, The Netherlands\, Germany) have also a long-standing tradition and experience of engaging in political party cooperation. \nThe European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) serves as an umbrella network and information hub on topics related to democracy and development cooperation and provides its members a joint platform to engage into a coordinated dialogue with EU institutions\, CSOs and other relevant stakeholders. Therefore\, ENoP is organising the first Democracy Dialogue with Commissioner Jutta Urpilainen on the topic of Political Party Cooperation\, with the following objectives: \n\nUnderstanding the EU’s Vision and Strategy for engaging with political parties\nDiscussion on the Implications (challenges and advantages/opportunities) of a higher EU profile in political party support\nHow to improve EU Donor/Implementer Coordination on PP cooperation on the ground?

SUMMARY:International Democracy Day Brussels 2022: Democracy in an Era of Geopolitics
DESCRIPTION:2021 was a year of further democratic backsliding in many countries worldwide. Seventy percent of the world’s population now live in either outright non-democratic regimes or democratically backsliding countries\, compared to forty-six percent ten years ago. \nIn December 2021\, one hundred countries joined President Biden’s Summit for Democracy to affirm global commitments to democracy\, with the White House announcing 2022 as a ‘year of action’ to support and promote democracy worldwide. As part of the preparation for this conference\, fourteen leading pro-democracy organisations and think tanks came together and identified Five Messages for the summit that are crucial to advancing democracy worldwide. In the European Union\, a Team Europe Democracy Initiative was also launched to inspire coordination with EU member states on external democracy action. \nRussia’s attack against Ukraine has escalated this shift in the geopolitical landscape. A watershed moment for the future of democracy\, this war further advances anti-democratic trends worldwide. Yet at this same time\, the last few months have seen the international community\, including EU member states\, come together in an unprecedented show of solidarity to protect and support democracy. \nDuring this year’s Democracy Day discussions\, a wide range of high-level speakers\, international democracy advocates\, and activists from both sides of the Atlantic and the Global South will address the challenges of this new world order for democracy. They will discuss the mechanisms to protect and support democracy\, such as Team Europe\, and the potential for greater North-South collaboration. \nProgramme \n14 September \n16.00 – 17.00    Ukrainian civil society manifesto seminar (EED) – online \n15 September 2022 \nIn-person event at the Committee of the Regions \n9.00-9.30    Registration\, coffee and croissants \n9.30-9.35    Video message from Roberta Metsola\, President of European Parliament \n9.35-9.40    Welcome speech by Czech Presidency \n9.40-9.55    Keynote speech on democratic backsliding by Abdalla Hamdok\, former Prime Minister of Sudan \n9.55-10.20    Context session: Shada Islam interviews Richard Youngs\, Senior fellow\, Carnegie Europe \n10.20-11.30    International panel on main theme of conference: Democracy in era of geopolitics \n11.30-11.45    Coffee break \n11.45-13.00   EU Presidencies and the EU External Democracy Agenda: Seizing momentum for democratic change  (International IDEA) \n13.00 -14.00     Lunch break \n14.00 -16.00     Youth Cohort for Democracy: Re-imagining Youth Political and Civic Engagement (EPD) \n16 September \n11.00 – 12.30  Hybrid threats to democracy (ENoP) – online \nThe event is organised with the support of the European Parliament\, Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union and the European Commission.

SUMMARY:Hybrid Conference | Protecting Journalists at Risk in Mexico and Central America
DESCRIPTION:The first eight months of 2022 have seen a shocking increase in lethal violence against journalists in Mexico\, resulting in the murder of at least 13 journalists. According to a group of organisations that is monitoring and documenting these murders (Article19\, the Committee to Protect Journalists – CPJ\, Women’s Communication and Information – CIMAC\, Reporters Without Borders and PEN International)\, the vast majority of these murders could be related to the exercise of the profession of journalism. If this trend continues\, 2022 stands to become one of the most lethal years on record for the press in Mexico. Impunity\, lack of investigations and ambiguous messages at all political levels indicate that the risk for this trend to continue is high. \n\n\nIn El Salvador\, Nayib Bukele’s government has recently approved some reforms that are seen by many observers and CSOs as a deliberate censorship of journalists’ work. This is only the last chapter of a systematic attack on press freedom that Bukele has been carrying out since he came to power in 2019. Physical threats\, several forms of harassment and now the concrete risk for journalists to be sentenced up to 15 years of imprisonment\, has obliged many to flee the country. Other countries in the region have registered a similar degradation of the democratic space\, of which journalism is a fundamental element. \n\n\nOrganised by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung and the EU-LAT Network\, with the support of ENoP\, this conference aims to shed a light on the current threats that media professionals are facing\, hearing directly from journalists from the region. Panellists will discuss how the European Union can provide support through political initiatives and concrete mechanisms that protect individuals from old and new forms of violence. \n\n\nDraft agenda \n\n\n15:30 – 16:00  Registration \n\n\nModeration by Marco Pérez Navarrete\, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung San Salvador Regional Office for Central America \n\n\n16:00 –16:10  Welcoming words by MEP Tilly Metz (Greens/EFA)\, Chair of the EP Delegation for relations with the countries of Central America \n\n\n16:10 – 16:30  Presentation of the report ‘Dejar todo’\, women journalists in a situation of forced internal displacement in Mexico\, by Lucía Lagunes Huerta\, Director of CIMAC\, Mexico and Camelia Muñoz Alvarado\, Journalist\, Mexico \n\n\n16:30 – 16:45  Shrinking space for journalists in Central America: the case of El Salvador and Guatemala\, by Carlos Dada\, Co-founder and Director of El Faro news website \n\n\n16:45 – 16:55  Remarks by an MEP tbc \n\n\n16:55 – 17:15  How the European Union can support journalism and press freedom worldwide and specifically in Latin America: political and financial mechanisms in place\, with Jonathan Hatwell\, Head of Division –  Mexico\, Central America and Caribbean at the European External Action Service \n\n\n17:15 – 17:50  Q&A and debate \n\n\n17:50 – 18:00  Closing remarks by an MEP tbc \n\n\n18:00 – 19:00  Reception \nWith simultaneous interpretation in English and Spanish \nThis event is organised with the support of ENoP as part of its current EU co-funded project “Strengthening ENoP as Actor in Support of Democratic and Pluralistic Societies”.

SUMMARY:Launch | Research on Social Capital in Poland and Hungary
DESCRIPTION:The European Network of Political Foundations and Projekt: Polska Foundation present a study on social trust and human capital in Poland and Hungary. The role of trust in the formation of social capital is crucial due to the current socio–political situation\, in particular the growing political polarization\, significant differences in confidence in the European Union between member\, and finally\, the COVID–19 pandemic. The report describes social capital in Poland and Hungary in terms of four dimensions: 1) Trust\, 2) Norms and values\, 3) Structure and 4) Action. \nThe study was based on qualitative and quantitative research conducted in Poland and Hungary. The results of the surveys shows that people in both countries are cautious towards others\, and only a minority believes that people can be trusted. Nevertheless\, there are significant differences between countries\, in particular if it comes to declared trust in the European Union\, as in the case of Poland it is the highest of all institutions surveyed\, while in Hungary it is one of the lowest. \nDuring the event\, authors of the report will present their findings in detail\, and will engaged in a discussion about the role of trust in modern democracy. \nProgramme \nWelcome: \n\nMiłosz Hodun\, President\, Projekt: Polska\n\nOpening remarks: \n\nAndrea Virág\, Director\, Republikon Institute\n\nSpeakers: \n\nKrzysztof Mączka\, auothor of the report\, A.
