DESCRIPTION:On 14–15 September 2026\, young political leaders from across Kenya will gather in Naivasha for “Youth Building Bridges II: From Dialogue to Democratic Action – Preparing Young Political Leaders for the 2027 General Elections.” The two-day event is designed and implemented by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) as part of the WYDE Political Parties project\, led by the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) and funded by the European Union. \nWith Kenya’s 2027 General Elections approaching\, the workshop will provide a space for young political leaders to look beyond election-day mobilisation and consider the broader role they can play in shaping political agendas\, strengthening their parties and contributing to peaceful\, issue-based electoral competition. The programme places particular emphasis on preparing young leaders early — before campaigns formally begin — and strengthening their capacity to participate as aspirants\, policy voices\, party officials and agenda setters. \nThe first day will examine the political road towards 2027\, including the opportunities and risks facing young people seeking greater influence within political parties and electoral processes. Participants will explore how to prepare credible and competitive candidacies\, navigate party nomination processes and internal competition peacefully\, and contribute to stronger internal party democracy. \nPolicy will also be at the heart of the discussions. Through facilitated group work\, participants will identify the issues they believe should shape youth-focused political agendas ahead of the elections\, including employment\, the digital economy\, education\, health\, governance\, climate resilience\, housing and public finance. These conversations will be complemented by practical work on political communication\, with a focus on building trust across political differences\, countering misinformation and hate speech\, and promoting constructive public debate. \nThe second day will turn more explicitly towards political organisation and electoral integrity. Sessions will explore community engagement\, voter education\, grassroots mobilisation and the structures young leaders can build ahead of the elections. Participants will also discuss their role in preventing electoral violence\, strengthening confidence in electoral processes and engaging with institutions and actors including the IEBC\, ORPP and PPLC. \nA central component of the programme will be the Cross-Party Leadership Lab\, where mixed-party groups will work together to design joint youth initiatives ahead of 2027. Their proposals will focus on areas such as peaceful political engagement\, civic education\, responsible digital engagement and issue-based campaigning before\, during and after party nominations. \nCrucially\, the workshop is designed to translate dialogue into concrete action. Participants will identify priority interventions\, timelines and responsibilities that they can take back to their respective political parties\, covering the period leading to party primaries\, electoral campaigns and the August 2027 General Election. \nThe programme will conclude with an interactive dialogue around a central question: Are young political leaders ready for 2027? SUMMARY:Advancing a Youth Representation Bill for Elected Assemblies in Côte d’Ivoire
DESCRIPTION:On 5–6 October 2026\, parliamentarians\, institutional representatives\, experts and civil society actors will gather in Abidjan\, Côte d’Ivoire\, for the second activity of the WYDE Parliamentary Caucus\, focused on “Youth Political Participation in Côte d’Ivoire: Exploring Ways to Strengthen the Regulatory Framework.” \nOrganised by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Political Dialogue West Africa within the framework of WYDE Political Parties\, led by the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) and funded by the European Union\, the two-day meeting will advance discussions on how Côte d’Ivoire’s legal and institutional framework can better support the meaningful representation of young people in political and public decision-making. \nCôte d’Ivoire has one of the youngest populations in the region\, with an average age of 23.2 according to the 2021 national census. Yet young people remain underrepresented in elected assemblies and some public decision-making bodies. Existing national legislation already recognises the importance of youth participation\, including the 2023 Youth Orientation Law\, which calls for measures to guarantee youth representation in Parliament\, local councils and the governing bodies of elected assemblies. \nBuilding on the first Parliamentary Caucus meeting\, this second activity will move the conversation towards concrete legislative options. Participants will examine a working draft bill aimed at strengthening youth representation in elected assemblies and public decision-making bodies\, while considering its legal feasibility and its potential application within the Ivorian political and electoral context. \nThe current consolidated draft proposes a minimum 30% youth quota for candidacies to the National Assembly\, Senate\, regional councils and municipal councils\, alongside provisions intended to ensure that youth inclusion goes beyond formal representation and provides realistic opportunities for election. It also considers youth representation in certain appointed public positions and mechanisms to encourage political parties to increase the presence of young candidates. \nThe first day will place the proposed reforms within a broader comparative and national context. Participants will examine examples of good practice in youth political participation from Africa and other regions\, before discussing the legal\, political and socio-cultural barriers that continue to affect young people’s access to political decision-making in Côte d’Ivoire. The programme will then turn to the revised draft bill\, with legal experts analysing its provisions and identifying areas for further refinement. \nOn the second day\, parliamentarians will provide their perspectives on the proposal and the challenges associated with its potential adoption in the Ivorian context.
