SUMMARY:Political Academy: Strengthening Youth Political Participation in West Africa
DESCRIPTION:From 14 to 16 October 2026\, 25 young political actors from Côte d’Ivoire\, Ghana\, Liberia and Togo are gathering in Grand-Bassam\, Côte d’Ivoire\, for a three-day Political Academy dedicated to strengthening youth participation in political and democratic decision-making across West Africa. \nOrganised by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Political Dialogue West Africa programme within the framework of WYDE Political Parties\, led by the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP) and funded by the European Union\, the Academy provides a platform for political learning\, leadership development and cross-border exchange. \nDespite representing a significant share of West Africa’s population\, young people continue to face substantial barriers to political leadership. Limited access to decision-making positions\, insufficient mentorship\, financial constraints and institutional obstacles often prevent their engagement from translating into meaningful political influence. \nUnder the theme “How Can Youth Political Participation Be Strengthened in West Africa?”\, the Academy brings together emerging political leaders to examine these challenges and explore practical solutions. \nThe programme focuses on three interconnected areas: understanding the barriers to youth political participation\, developing leadership and communication skills\, and translating political engagement into concrete action. \nThrough expert-led sessions\, panel discussions\, group exercises and political debate simulations\, participants will examine how young people can gain greater influence within political parties\, strengthen their role in internal decision-making and develop the skills needed for responsible and inclusive political leadership. \nParticular attention will be given to political communication\, public speaking\, advocacy\, ethical leadership and digital participation\, including the challenges posed by disinformation\, hate speech and political polarisation. \nA central objective of the Academy is to encourage cross-party and cross-border dialogue\, allowing participants to exchange experiences and approaches from their respective countries while identifying common challenges facing young political actors across the region. \nThe final day will focus on moving from reflection to action. Through collaborative workshops\, participants will explore practical recommendations and potential initiatives to strengthen youth representation and political influence in West Africa. \nBeyond the training itself\, the Academy seeks to foster lasting connections among emerging political leaders and encourage continued cooperation across national and political boundaries. \nThrough initiatives such as this\, WYDE Political Parties supports young people in moving beyond political mobilisation towards meaningful participation in leadership and decision-making\, contributing to more inclusive and representative political institutions. \n  \n\nEvent Details\n\nEvent: Political Academy for Young Leaders – Strengthening Youth Political Participation in West Africa\nTheme: How Can Youth Political Participation Be Strengthened in West Africa?\nDates: 14–16 October 2026\nVenue: Hôtel Le Suprême\, Grand-Bassam\, Côte d’Ivoire\nOrganised by: Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) – Political Dialogue West Africa\nProject: WYDE Political Parties – led by ENoP and funded by the European Union\nParticipants: 25 young political actors from Côte d’Ivoire\, Ghana\, Liberia and Togo\nFormat: Three-day residential academy\, expert presentations\, panel discussions\, group workshops and political debate simulations\nMain topics: Youth political participation\, political party leadership\, democratic governance\, political communication\, advocacy\, ethical leadership\, digital engagement and regional cooperation.
